The Big Short — Featurette

For a movie about the 2008 financial crisis, Adam McKay isn't exactly the first name that springs to mind. The former SNL head writer-turned-comedy director -- perhaps best known for his collaborations with Will Ferrell, most notably the "Anchorman" films -- makes a rare foray into drama with "The Big Short."

Based on the investigative book by best-selling author Michael Lewis (Moneyball, The Blind Side), the upcoming film, in which McKay also adapted the screenplay with Charles Randolph, is being positioned as a possible awards contender. And despite its title, the cast is filled with plenty of big names: Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Melissa Leo, Marisa Tomei and many more.

"The Big Short," which centers on a group of unconventional financial experts who ended up predicting the housing market crash in the mid-2000s, is making its world premiere this week at the AFI Film Festival. It's also set to open in theaters on December 11th before expanding wide on December 23rd.

Check out a new featurette (above), which explains why McKay was the perfect director for this production, despite his long history with comedy.

When four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to, the global collapse of the economy, they had an idea: The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything. Based on the true story and best-selling book by Michael Lewis (The Blind Side, Moneyball).
