Creed — Featurette: 'Generations'

Sylvester Stallone and Oscar-winning producer Irwin Winkler thought the "Rocky" film franchise was all but "finished" when they learned "Fruitvale Station" director Ryan Coogler had come up with an interesting concept for a potential new spin-off sequel. It was an idea that "would create a whole new audience and would continue on Rocky but in a different way." Winkler enthusiastically states in this newly-released featurette for the upcoming "Rocky"-related boxing drama "Creed," starring Michael B. Jordan as the son of the late Apollo Creed.

Coogler, who co-wrote the upcoming film with his collaborator Aaron Covington, reveals in the new "Creed" preview that the project sprang from growing up as a major "Rocky" enthusiast, thanks in part to his father's obsession with the films. "My father's a massive, massive "Rocky" fan. He can repeat all the lines -- line for line," says Coogler. "I was an athlete growing up. And what (my father) would do was, right before a big game, he would make me sit down and watch 'Rocky 2' on VHS. And that was my introduction to the character and the story."

The film, which co-stars Phylicia Rashad and Selma's Tessa Thompson, follows Apollo Creed's son, Adonis, as he embarks on his own arduous journey to becoming a boxing champion with the help of former champion-turned-reluctant boxing trainer Rocky Balboa.

"Creed" opens November 25th.

Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Still, there's no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed's legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa. Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) down and asks him to be his trainer. Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight game for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo -- the fierce rival who became his closest friend. Agreeing to take him on, Rocky trains the young fighter, even as the former champ is battling an opponent more deadly than any he faced in the ring. With Rocky in his corner, it isn’t long before Adonis gets his own shot at the title ... but can he develop not only the drive but also the heart of a true fighter, in time to get into the ring?
