What would happen if the kids from Hogwarts went off to college? Well, it might look something like "The Magicians," Syfy's new drama series based on author Lev Grossman's best-selling fantasy novels about a group of students attending a clandestine New York University that specializes in magic and sorcery.

Greenlit for 12 episodes, the series stars Jason Ralph (NBC's Aquarius) as Quentin Coldwater, a college-bound student, fantasy book fanatic, and amateur card trick magician, whose dreams come true when he discovers that he, indeed, possesses magical powers, earning him the right to be enrolled in the Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy.

Quentin soon meets other fellow student magicians (Hale Appleman, Jade Tailor, Stella Maeve, Arjun Gupta, Summer Bishil) before quickly learning the fundamental tenets of college life: "live, work, play, drink, study, screw, drink, cram, drink." And oh, yeah, "magic is a drug." So, don't get hooked.

Check out a brand-new trailer for "The Magicians," which recently premiered this weekend at the New York Comic-Con.

The series, in which filmmaker Mike Cahill (Another Earth, I Origins) directs the pilot episode written by show's executive producer Sera Gamble (Supernatural), will debut in January 2016 on Syfy.

Quentin Coldwater is a high school senior, but he’s still secretly obsessed with a series of fantasy novels he read when he was little, about the adventures of five children in a magical land called Fillory. Compared to that, everything in his real life just seems gray and colorless. That changes when Quentin finds himself admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the practice of modern sorcery. But magic doesn’t bring Quentin the happiness and adventure and meaning he thought it would—until he and his friends make a stunning discovery: Fillory is real.
