The U.S. trailer for director Todd Haynes' 1950s-set tragic love story "Carol," starring Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, has been released.

Based on the 1952 semi-autobiographical lesbian romance novel by "The Talented Mr. Ripley" author Patricia Highsmith, the New York-set film tells of an illicit love affair between a sophisticated married woman (Blanchett) and a young department-store clerk (Mara). Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) plays Blanchett's husband who catches wind of his wife's lesbian affair and then threatens to take away her children. Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story) and Jake Lacy (The Office) co-star.

Adapted by Emmy-nominated writer Phyllis Nagy (HBO's Mrs. Harris), "Carol" has been tipped as a possible awards contender, particularly Blanchett's performance as the title character.

The film premiered at Cannes this year and will screen at a couple of film festivals before hitting theaters on November 20th.

Starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara and set against the glamorous backdrop of '1950s New York, Carol is an achingly beautiful depiction of love against the odds. From the author of The Talented Mr. Ripley and acclaimed director Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven, I'm Not There, Mildred Pierce) comes a powerful drama about a married woman who risks everything when she embarks on a romance with a younger department store worker.
