Renowned inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen is on a mission to resolve the global water crisis in the new trailer for the documentary "SlingShot."

Perhaps best known for inventing the self-balancing "Segway" personal transporter, though his technical advancements in the medical-care field have been very successful, Kamen has made a concerted effort to address the issues of unclean drinking water that have been plaguing third-world countries for decades. The water purification device, SlingShot, is Kamen's latest invention that he hopes will save lives. But manufacturing and distributing these devices to the people who need them the most have become an exhausting uphill battle.

Helmed by TV director Paul Lazarus, the documentary, which is coming off a solid festival run, seems to be serving multiple purposes -- a profile piece on Kamen's life and career, a mission statement about his "SlingShot" project and a sort-of humanitarian call to arms.

The film is set to open in select theaters this month, opening first in New York on Friday, July 10th and then in Los Angeles July 17th, with other cities to follow.

SlingShot focuses on noted Segway inventor Dean Kamen, his fascinating life, and his work to solve the world’s water crisis. A quirky genius, Kamen lives in a house with secret passages, a closet full of denim, and a helicopter garage. His latest passion: the SlingShot water purification system created to obliterate half of human illness on the planet. SlingShot is about an indomitable man who just might have enough innovative thinking to create a solution for a crisis affecting billions.
