London Road — Behind-the-Scenes Featurette

added: Tue, Jun 2nd '15

Do you wish more musicals can be dark and moody -- and sometimes deal with real-life tragedies? Well, the new British musical "London Road" -- featuring Olivia Colman and Tom Hardy as members of a small English community still reeling from the arrest of a serial killer who had been secretly living in their town -- is something you might want to get familiar with. Just don't expect the sort of typical over-the-top singing you've experienced in musicals before.

Here, everyone is kind of speak-singing. It's a soft, almost conversational, rapping that has been set to music, in which the lyrics are based on a series of real interviews with various members of an English town who were emotionally affected by the shocking 2008 arrest of English serial killer Steve Wright.

Go behind the scenes of this strange, unconventional musical film with a newly-released featurette, which further explains the process of converting taped interviews into a workable musical composition. Also added are a couple of clips featuring the musical talents of Tom Hardy and Olivia Colman.

"London Road," which comes from award-winning theater director-turned-feature film helmer Rufus Norris (Broken) and written by playwright Alecky Blythe, will open in the UK on June 12th.

London Road documents the events of 2006, when the quiet rural town of Ipswich was shattered by the discovery of the bodies of five women. The residents of London Road had struggled for years with frequent soliciting and curb-crawling on their street. When a local resident was charged and then convicted of the murders, the community grappled with what it meant to be at the epicenter of this tragedy.
