In what may possibly be his most menacing performance to date, Johnny Depp tackles the role of real-life Boston mobster and FBI informant James "Whitey" Bulger in the upcoming gangster drama "Black Mass."

And according to this newly-released trailer, Bulger wasn't just any old neighborhood hoodlum. In fact, he was regarded as "the most feared, the most wanted, and the most notorious gangster in U.S. history." Or in other words, you could simply say, "the devil" was controlling the crime-riddled streets of Boston during the '70s.

The film, which seems destined to rank among Depp's most memorable portrayals, marks the third directorial outing from "Crazy Heart" and "Out of the Furnace" helmer Scott Cooper. It also features an incredible star-studded cast that includes Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Peter Sarsgaard, Dakota Johnson and Corey Stoll.

Based on the book by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill, "Black Mass" is set to open in theaters on September 18th.

In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James "Whitey" Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.
