Carol — Film Clips

Filmmaker Todd Haynes may have written and directed HBO's acclaimed 2011 miniseries "Mildred Pierce," but his latest effort "Carol" is his first feature film in eight years.

With the upcoming drama set to debut this week at Cannes, Haynes reunites with actress Cate Blanchett -- the two last worked together on 2007's unconventional Bob Dylan biopic "I'm Not There" -- and are again tackling a New York-set period piece. This time, Blanchett plays a 1950s married woman named "Carol," who falls in love with a young female department-store clerk, played by Rooney Mara.

The pulpy romantic drama, which is an adaptation of "The Talented Mr. Ripley" author Patricia Highsmith"s 1952 novel, "The Price of Salt," is one of the two U.S. films that will be screened in competition at this year's Cannes. And to kick off the festivities, a pair of clips from the film have landed online. Watch them, above.

From the author of The Talented Mr. Ripley and acclaimed director Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven, I’m Not There, Mildred Pierce) comes a powerful drama about a married woman who risks everything when she embarks on a romance with a younger department store worker. Starring Academy Award-winner Cate Blanchett and Academy Award-nominee Rooney Mara & set against the glamourous backdrop of 1950s New York, Carol is an achingly beautiful depiction of love against the odds.
