The Sea Of Trees — Early Film Clip

Since winning his Oscar last year, Matthew McConaughey doesn't appear to be slowing down. The "alright-alright-alright" star will next be seen in director Gus Van Sant's existential/suicide drama "The Sea Of Trees," starring alongside Ken Watanabe.

The film, which will be making its world premiere this weekend at Cannes, follows a seriously depressed American man (played by McConaughey) who travels to Japan with the intention of killing himself at the infamous Aokigahara forest. It's a serene location near the base of Mount Fuji, which is actually known for being a popular spot for suicides. McConaughey's character eventually meets up with a Japanese man (Watanabe) who is also walking through the dark green forest for similar reasons.

As the Cannes-selected movie is about to debut in the competition, an early film clip, featuring McConaughey and Watanabe, has been released online. And it was just announced that Roadside Attractions has picked up U.S. rights to the film.

Arthur Brennan treks into Aokigahara, known as The Sea of Trees, a mysterious dense forest at the base of Japan's Mount Fuji where people go to contemplate life and death. Having found the perfect place to die, he encounters Takumi Nakamura, a Japanese man who has also lost his way. The two men begin a journey of reflection and survival, which affirms Arthur's will to live and reconnects him to his love with his wife. (via
