Though he sadly passed away in July of this year, former Olympic runner and WWII hero Louis "Louie" Zamperini, whose incredible story of survival forms the basis of the forthcoming Angelina Jolie-directed drama "Unbroken," was very much involved in the making of the film. Zamperini, who became a Christian inspirational speaker after the war, saw his harrowing ordeal turned into a best-selling biography by "Seabiscuit" author Laura Hillenbrand, but his dream was always to see his life story realized on the big screen.

"[Zamperini] always tried to be inspirational and help others, but he always wanted to do it in a film," Jolie reveals in a newly-released featurette for "Unbroken." The Oscar-winning actress-turned-director also adds, "And he's waited 50 years, and now this is that moment." It had been reported that just days before his death, Jolie, who had formed a close relationship with Zamperini, showed him a rough-cut of the film on her laptop in the hospital.

British actor Jack O'Connell, in what could possibly end up being a star-making performance, portrays Zamperini in the film, which details his early days as a distant runner in the 1936 Olympics, and the long-enduring period as a prisoner-of-war in a Japanese camp. "Unbroken" opens on Christmas day, December 25th.

Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie directs and produces Unbroken, an epic drama that follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis "Louie" Zamperini (Jack O'Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII -- only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand's ("Seabiscuit: An American Legend") enormously popular book, Unbroken brings to the big screen Zamperini's unbelievable and inspiring true story about the resilient power of the human spirit.
