Before Jack Ryan was a legendary CIA operative, he was a tenderfoot analyst with little experience in hand-to-hand combat. But hey! That doesn't mean he wasn't capable of kicking some ass when he needed to.

In this new extended action clip from Paramount's upcoming Jack Ryan franchise reboot "Shadow Recruit," Chris Pine tackles the iconic CIA hero created by popular spy author Tom Clancy. Pine plays him as an office rookie who's on the verge of being promoted to a full-time field agent -- that is, of course, if he can impress his recruiter (Kevin Costner) by surviving his first mission to kill an enemy combatant.

Though initially set to open on Christmas day, "Shadow Recruit" is now slated for January 17th. The spy thriller also stars Keira Knightley as Ryan's soon-to-be wife (she apparently has been kept in the dark about his secret job as a spy). While the main villain is played by Kenneth Branagh, who also works behind the lens, directing the film from an original screenplay that was NOT based on a Clancy novel.

This original story follows a young Jack Ryan (Chris Pine) as he uncovers a financial terrorist plot. The story follows him from 9/11, through his tour of duty in Afghanistan, which scarred him forever, and into his early days in the Financial Intelligence Unit of the modern CIA where he becomes an analyst, under the guardianship of his handler, Harper (Kevin Costner). When Ryan believes he's uncovered a Russian plot to collapse the United States economy, he goes from being an analyst to becoming a spy and must fight to save his own life and those of countless others, while also trying to protect the thing that's more important to him than anything, his relationship with his fiancee Cathy (Keira Knightley).
