Transcendence — Trailer

The theory that humanity's next step in evolution might somehow involve artificial intelligence provides the framework for "Transcendence," the thought-provoking sci-fi thriller from Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister (Inception, The Dark Knight), who makes his directorial debut.

And while the promo teasers released yesterday were filled with technobabble, the film's first official theatrical trailer offers a real look at what Pfister has cooked up -- and thankfully it's not another cryptic soliloquy.

Johnny Depp is seen playing Dr. Will Caster, a high-profile computer scientist whose radical ideas on "singularity" (the infinite power of artificial intelligence) has gotten him a few enemies, including a gun-toting anti-techno activist. So, when Caster is shot in an assassination attempt, his science partner-slash-wife (played by Rebecca Hall) decides to do the one thing that can save his brilliant mind from expiring -- upload him into a computer program. Things get even crazier after that.

"Transcendence" also stars Paul Bettany, Morgan Freeman, Kate Mara and Cillian Murphy, and it's currently slated to hit theaters on April 18th.

Dr. Will Caster is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed -- to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn and friend Max, both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can... but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power -- to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.
