Forever immortalized in perhaps the creepiest skipping-rope rhyme ever sung on playgrounds, the notorious 1892 criminal case of alleged axe murder Lizzie Borden has been turned into a television movie for the Lifetime channel, and here's your first look as the network dropped the debut trailer online.
In "Lizzie Borden Took An Ax," Christina Ricci stars as the 32-year-old Massachusetts woman who was accused of bludgeoning her father and stepmother with a hatchet, but never convicted for the grisly murders -- although her murder trial did become a massive media spectacle comparable to only a handful of others such as the O.J. Simpson case.
Directed by TV vet Nick Gomez (Burn Notice, The Following, Dexter) and co-starring Billy Campbell and Clea DuVall, "Lizzie Borden Took An Ax" is slated to premiere on January 25th on Lifetime.
The nursery rhyme "Lizzie Borden took an ax ... and gave her mother forty whacks ... when she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty-one" has been folklore for generations. But, in fact, it was Lizzie Borden -- one of the most legendary figures in American history -- who first whetted the public's voracious interest in scandalous crimes in the 1800s with her own gruesome story involving the brutal murder of her parents.
