Philomena — International Trailer

added: Fri, Aug 9th '13

Here's the international trailer for "Philomena," the latest drama from English director Stephen Frears (The Queen), starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan (who also co-wrote the screenplay based on the 2009 book by British author Martin Sixsmith).

The film tells the heartbreaking true story of Philomena Lee (Dench), an elderly Irish woman who kept a 50-year-old family secret regarding a baby she once had as an unmarried teenager, which was forcibly put up for adoption by the Catholic Church. In the preview, Coogan portrays Sixsmith as a washed-up journalist who, despite his distaste for "human interest" stories, decides to follow Philomena as she goes searching for her long-lost son in America. Soon, the unlikely pair begin to develop a bond that is touching, if not emotional.

"Philomena" will be hitting UK cinemas on November 1st. As of yet, The Weinstein Company has not announced the film's U.S. release date, but don't be surprised if it opens in select cities at the end of this year.

Philomena Lee was sent away to a convent to be looked after as a "fallen woman." Taken from her at the age of 3, her son was "sold" in America. Forced to vow she would never seek him, Philomena fought her vow and spent the next 50 years searching for her lost son. With the help of journalist, Martin Sixsmith, Philomena travels to America to find her lost son.
