Tom Hanks hasn't been nominated for an Oscar since 2001 and hasn't won one since Forrest Gump. But with a couple of Oscar-caliber film projects on the horizon, Hanks is definitely due for some kind of recognition. And from the looks of the newest trailer, perhaps his best bet for an Oscar nod this year may come from playing the title role in Paul Greengrass' real-life Somali hijacking thriller "Captain Phillips," which is set to open in theaters on October 11th.
Here, Hanks portrays Richard Phillips, the American sea captain whose cargo ship was overtaken by Somali pirates in 2009. Based on Phillips' 2010 memoir, the film traces the five-day ordeal, during which Phillips heroically exhibited a level-headed attitude to ensure the safety of his crew. Co-starring as Phillips' wife, Andrea, is Catherine Keener, who is quickly seen at the beginning of this new preview. Take look, above.
Captain Phillips is director Paul Greengrass's multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is – through Greengrass's distinctive lens – simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award® winner Tom Hanks), and his Somali counterpart, Muse (Barkhad Abdi). Set on an incontrovertible collision course off the coast of Somalia, both men will find themselves paying the human toll for economic forces outside of their control.
