It's that time of year again: here's the first Smaug Blog for Peter Jackson's second installment of his Hobbit trilogy "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," which continues the on-going adventures of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and his merry men of dwarves through the most dangerous of forests and over the highest mountains of Middle-Earth. This new video doesn't have much as far as film footage goes, it just explores the vast stunning locations that shooting in New Zealand has to offer to bring Middle-Earth to life.

"The Hobbit" is scheduled to open on December 13th.

After successfully crossing over (and under) the Misty Mountains, Thorin and Company must seek aid from a powerful stranger before taking on the dangers of Mirkwood Forest--without their Wizard. The party must complete the journey to Lonely Mountain and burglar Baggins must seek out the Secret Door that will give them access to the hoard of the dragon Smaug. And, where has Gandalf got off to? And what is his secret business to the south? (via
