For his directorial debut "Don Jon," in which he also wrote, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt created one helluva character to portray: a New Jersey gym rat who's addicted to pornography. Or as he poetically puts it in the film's debut trailer, released today, "Only a few things I really care about in life: my body, my pad, my ride, my family, my church, my boyz, my girlz ... and my porn." Well, presumably, not all in that order.
"Don Jon," a dramedy about how this unabashed skirt chaser (Gordon-Levitt) is forced to deal with his sex addiction when he meets the girl of his dreams (played by Scarlett Johansson), will feature appearances from Julianne Moore, Brie Larson, Rob Brown, Glenne Headly, and as Jon's muscle-head father, Tony Danza (who you may remember acted with a very young JGL in "Angels in the Outfield"). The film made its world premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival. It was quickly picked up, and scheduled for a September 27th release. Check out the trailer, above.
Jon Martello (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a strong, handsome, good old fashioned guy. His buddies call him Don Jon due to his ability to "pull" a different woman every weekend, but even the finest fling doesn't compare to the bliss he finds alone in front of the computer watching pornography. Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson) is a bright, beautiful, good old fashioned girl. Raised on romantic Hollywood movies, she's determined to find her Prince Charming and ride off into the sunset. Wrestling with good old fashioned expectations of the opposite sex, Jon and Barbara struggle against a media culture full of false fantasies to try and find true intimacy in this unexpected comedy written and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
