British filmmaker Ben Wheatley is a machine. Within the last five years, he's directed four full-length features, two British TV series, and a segment in the horror anthology, The ABCs of Death. Since then, he's gobbled up accolades, and generated a loyal fan base. Yet, he still remains relatively unknown to the general moviegoing public.
His latest feature "A Field In England," a Werner Herzog-esque, black-and-white drama about two 17th-century English deserters who convince their hungry captors to search for treasure in a delicious mushroom field, where they ultimately fall into a mind-bending acid trip, is surely not intended to win over a mainstream audience. But it'll likely carve a deeper groove in his well-established niche. And possibly bring new life to the psychedelic sub-genre made famous in such films as "The Trip," "Easy Rider" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."
"A Field In England" is getting a theatrical and VOD release in the States later in the year. But you can enjoy the film's UK trailer, which has been released online, today. Take a look, above.
England during the Civil War: A small group of deserters flee from a raging battle through an overgrown field. They are captured by two men -- O'Neil and Cutler. O'Neil (Michael Smiley), an alchemist, forces the group to aid him in his search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field. Crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group quickly descend into a chaos of arguments, fighting and paranoia, and, as it becomes clear that the treasure might be something other than gold, they slowly become victim to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field.
