Good things come to those who wait. An expression that diehard fans of bizarro filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky are hoping is true.
The 84-year-old Chilean-French auteur, who brought us the classic midnight movies "El Topo," "The Holy Mountain" and "Santa Sangre," hasn't directed a feature film for more than twenty years. The streak ended over the weekend when he finally premiered his latest effort, "The Dance Of Reality," at the Cannes Film Festival.
The feature is said to be based on the filmmaker's memories of his upbringing in 1920s Chile; a nostalgic dream-like yarn that centers on the painful relationship between a sensitive son and his callous father.
"The Dance Of Reality" received a French trailer. While it's not in English, it, nevertheless, should give you a taste of the kind of circus frenzy that Jodorowsky has concocted. It's magically bizarre, to say the least. Check it out, above.
"Having broken away from my illusory self, I was desperately seeking a path and a meaning to life." This phrase perfectly sums up Alejandro Jodorowsky's biographical project: reconstituting the incredible adventure of his life. Alejandro Jodorowsky was born in 1929 in Tocopilla, a coastal town on edge of the Chilean desert, where this film was shot. It was there where he discovered the fundamentals of reality, as he underwent an unhappy and alienated childhood as part of an uprooted family.
