No, it's not The Commitments. It's The Sapphires! And this Aussie feel-good dramedy, which tells the incredible true story of an all-girl Aboriginal singing group, who were sent to war-torn Vietnam to entertain US troops with soul music during the late 60s, has already become a huge box-office sensation in Australia last year. Now it's finally coming to the States (via The Weinstein Company). And we have a new look at a domestic trailer (posted above), featuring Irish funnyman Chris O'Dowd (from Bridemaids fame) as the talent scout/music manager, who stumbles on the singing female group while hosting a makeshift talent show in a small Australian town. He believes their wholesome country act needs a new direction by way of finger-snapping soul music. Which sets off a wild adventure for the ladies -- played by Deborah Mailman, Shari Sebbens, Miranda Tapsell, and Australian R&B singer/actress and former Australian Idol contestant, Jessica Mauboy.
"The Sapphires" is slated to hit US theaters on March 22nd.
Inspired by a true story, THE SAPPHIRES follows four vivacious, young and talented Australian Aboriginal girls from a remote mission as they learn about love, friendship and war when their all girl group The Sapphires entertains the U.S. troops in Vietnam in 1968. Cynthia (Miranda Tapsell), Gail (Deborah Mailman), Julie (Jessica Mauboy) and Kay (Shari Sebbens) are discovered by Dave (Chris O'Dowd), a good-humored talent scout with a kind heart, very little rhythm but a great knowledge of soul music. As their manager, Dave books the sisters their first true gig giving them their first taste of stardom, and travels them to Vietnam to sing for the American troops.
