Who knew after walking alone on the lonely road of "boulevard of broken dreams" you would eventually end up strolling over to Broadway? Certainly not Green Day's frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who admits in the trailer for the documentary "Broadway Idiot" that he never thought he would be a part of a lavish rock-opera musical -- let alone one that would be inspired by his Grammy-winning rock album "American Idiot." But that's exactly what happened to him and his band mates in 2010.
Their unorthodox path from punk stars to musical theatre producers has been documented in a new film that will be premiering at this year's SXSW Film Festival. It was directed by veteran TV journalist Doug Hamilton, who seemingly was given special backstage access to the popular Broadway production during its infancy. Take a look at the trailer, above.
Broadway Idiot follows Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong from a punk rock concert at Madison Square Garden to the opening of his musical American Idiot on Broadway - only ten blocks away, but worlds apart. From behind the curtain share in the crazy journey of turning the mega-hit album into a punk rock musical -- and ultimately see how the world of theater transformed Billie Joe.
