Mud — Trailer

When it premiered last year at Cannes, Jeff Nichols' dramatic thriller "Mud" was lauded for its Mark Twain-esque coming-of-age tale about two adventurous boys who form a sympathetic relationship with a mysterious fugitive named Mud (played by Matthew McConaughey). Now, we have a look at the film's first trailer. And it appears the Arkansas-born filmmaker, whose last film was the fantastic psychological disaster-thriller "Take Shelter," has again brought a new unique look at southern lifestyle, not normally seen in films today.

This time, Nichols has cast Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon, Sam Shepard, and his frequent collaborator Michael Shannon to join McConaughey in a southern-fried suspense tale about two Mississippi boys whipped into a risky world when they decide to help Mud evade the police and a determined bounty hunter (Shepard), so he can reunite with his loyal girlfriend (Witherspoon) who's waiting for him on the other side of town.

The film, which also co-stars Sarah Paulson, Ray McKinnon and Joe Don Baker, will have a limited theatrical run starting on April 26th. It's also set to screen in a couple of days at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Mud is the story of an improbable friendship between 14-year old Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and a charismatic fugitive named Mud (Matthew McConaughey). Exploring the nearby Mississippi river, Ellis and his best friend (Jacob Lofland) discover a deserted island where they encounter Mud, a dirty, desperate yet oddly compelling stranger. Mud is on the run for a crime of passion, and bounty hunters are closing in on him. Moved by the romantic notion of his story and intrigued by the promise of a great adventure, the boys conspire to aid Mud in his escape and reunite him with the love of his life, Juniper (Reese Witherspoon).
