Sometimes the most enjoyable experiences about watching Pixar films in theaters are those miniature-size flicks that play before the main event. They're usually crafted in eye-popping detail. And it appears "The Blue Umbrella," the new six-minute short that will be attached to prints of "Monsters University," will be no exception. Take a look for yourself, as Pixar has released a 30-second "first look" clip from the film, which centers on a blue umbrella's playful attempt to attract the attention of a red umbrella through a crowded street of black umbrellas.
The movie marks the directorial debut of Saschka Unseld, one of Pixar's camera and staging designers. And according to wsj.com, it is also the studio's first film to be originated from "one of its technical artists." You know, those talented FX wizards that worked tirelessly perfecting lighting, shading and layout, but never get picked to the big dance, until now. You can catch Unseld's "The Blue Umbrella" when it opens with "Monsters University" on June 21st.
Amidst the rain in a singing city, two umbrellas – one blue, one not – fall eternally in love.
