There's a film opening in the UK this week, and it could be just as emotionally jarring as Lynne Ramsay's disturbing drama "We Need to Talk About Kevin." It's called "What Richard Did," and it's based on Kevin Power's 2008 debut novel, "Bad Day in Blackrock", about a posh Irish teen whose bright academic and athletic future is shattered when his involvement in a violent incident is revealed. Directed by Lenny Abrahamson, the Irish drama stars Jack Reynor, whose impressive portrayal of troubled teen Richard has gotten the actor some attention from Hollywood bigwigs, including director Michael Bay, who apparently offered him one of the lead roles in the next Transformers movie (though still unconfirmed).
So, what is it that Richard did to make everyone around him so upset, including his fearful father (played by Lars Mikkelsen)? This beautifully haunting UK trailer gives only vague clues about it. However, it does offer us a warning about teens that get together with alcoholic beverages -- bad stuff will likely happen. The film, so far, is not expected to open in the States, but will arrive in theaters in the UK this Friday, January 11th.
WHAT RICHARD DID follows Richard Karlsen (Jack Reynor), golden-boy athlete and undisputed alpha-male of his privileged set of South Dublin teenagers, through the summer between the end of school and the beginning of university. The world is bright and everything seems possible, until in one summer night Richard does something that destroys it all and shatters the lives of the people closest to him.
