At age 14, Elle Fanning has already compiled an impressive filmography that includes co-starring in J.J. Abrams' blockbuster "Super 8" and Cameron Crowe's family hit "We Bought a Zoo." Now, it seems the young teen actress is set to make her biggest breakthrough yet in acclaimed filmmaker Sally Potter's coming-of-age drama "Ginger & Rosa." It's a leading performance that requires Fanning to speak in a British accent, while facing the political-changing times of 1962 London.
"The whole world can be blown into pieces any minute," Fanning says as Ginger in this US trailer (provided by Playlist). It looks like she's a worrisome girl who gets the unorthodox advice from her beatnik father to "seize" the day, which persuades her to get political about the world's threat of nuclear war. Unfortunately, it's not something that her lifelong best friend Rosa cares much about. This seemingly will tear their relationship apart, resulting in some emotional revelations.
The film will mark the introduction of up-and-coming actress Alice Englert (as Rosa), who will be seen starring in February's release of the fantasy teen romance "Beautiful Creatures." There's also a talented supporting cast that includes Timothy Spall, Annette Bening, Christina Hendricks, and Alessandro Nivola. "Ginger & Rosa" will have a limited theatrical run starting on March 15th.
As the Cold War meets the sexual revolution in 1960s London, the lifelong friendship of two teenage girls (Elle Fanning and Alice Englert) is shattered by ideological differences and personal betrayals.
