Just because Sam Worthington has starred in big Hollywood blockbusters like Avatar, Terminator Salvation, Clash of the Titans and Man on a Ledge -- err, okay, scratch that one. Well, it doesn't mean he's forgotten where he came from. In this trailer for the upcoming dramedy "Drift," you can see the Australian actor has returned home playing a hippie surfer who ekes out a living shooting surfing films. The movie is actually set in 1972 and centers on two local surfing brothers (Xavier Samuel and Myles Pollard) who join the filmmaking surfer (Worthington) for a chance to start a dream surf shop, but later discover that Worthington's character has gotten them involve with hiding narcotics for a dangerous drug dealer.
The movie, inspired by a true story, was written and directed by Morgan O'Neill and co-directed by Ben Nott. It's also expected to open sometime next year.
After their mother escapes from Sydney to Margaret River in the 1970's, the two Kelly brothers spend their youth searching for the perfect wave. Out of necessity the family launch a backyard surf business -- re-thinking board design, crafting homemade wetsuits and selling merchandise out of their van. Battling big waves, small town conservatism and criminals, the brothers give rise to a global brand. A story of passion, corruption, friendship and loyalty, deadly addictions and fractured relationships, DRIFT tells a tale of courage and the will to survive at all odds.
