It will likely be jotted down in the history books as the most ambitious documentary project ever produced. But if you think filmmaker Michael Apted is ready to give up on his acclaimed UP series, which periodically documents the trials and tribulations of fourteen typical British folks. Well, the answer is not only no, but it seems his latest installment "56 Up" is completed, and has a fascinating trailer that you should probably check out.
Conceived as a TV production about the socio-economic situation in 1964, England, the highly acclaimed documentary series started when these fourteen subjects were merely seven years old. Since then, director Michael Apted has followed these children for every seven years, reporting on the details of their lives as they enter into their adulthood. But what is life like now, at age 56? Well, we'll only have to wait about a month to find out when the film opens in select theaters in January, starting with New York (Jan 4) and Los Angeles (Jan 18).
Starting in 1964 with Seven Up, The UP Series has explored this Jesuit maxim. The original concept was to interview 14 children from diverse backgrounds from all over England, asking them about their lives and their dreams for the future. Every seven years, renowned director Michael Apted, a researcher for Seven Up, has been back to talk to them, examining the progression of their lives. From cab driver Tony to schoolmates Jackie, Lynn and Susan and the heart-breaking Neil, as they turn 56 more life-changing decisions and surprising developments are revealed.
