When he came up with the idea for a movie about a 40-year-old couple trying to spice up their tedious relationship, it took a moment for Judd Apatow to realize that he should just use Pete and Debbie from his blockbuster comedy "Knocked Up." Obviously, the result is "This is 40," the new R-rated marriage comedy starring Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann as the aging couple who fears that their best days are behind them.
As Apatow is putting the final touches for the film's theatrical release next month (December 21st), the studio released this brand-new red band featurette, which gives us a better idea of what Pete and Debbie are facing as they hit their golden age. And boy, it doesn't look too peaceful. Pete is struggling to keep his record business afloat, while his manipulative father (Albert Brooks) continues to ask for money. Deb hates the idea of getting older, but still finds time to verbally assault her daughter's school bully. Plus they both are straining to keep their scrappy eldest daughter from growing up too fast. At times like these, maybe Pete and Deb should take Melissa McCarthy's lead and scream obscenities at the musical play, "Music Man." It works for us.
Writer/director/producer Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Funny People) brings audiences This Is 40, an original comedy that expands upon the story of Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) from the blockbuster hit Knocked Up as we see firsthand how they are dealing with their current state of life.
