Slip on your pointe shoes and get ready to step into the brutal and competitive world of professional ballet dancing. Check out the official trailer for the new ballet drama "The American."

Talia Ryder, recognized for her roles in "Never Rarely Sometimes Always," Netflix's "Do Revenge," and Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story," takes center stage as Joy Womack, a young American ballet dancer who has been accepted to join one of the most prestigious ballet training schools in the world, Moscow's infamously tough Bolshoi Ballet Academy. Once there, Joy is put through the wringer, working under the tutelage of an unrelenting Russian ballerina, played by Diane Kruger, of "Inglourious Basterds" and "National Treasure" fame.

"The American," also known internationally as "Joika," is written and directed by New Zealand-born filmmaker James Napier Robertson, known for writing and directing the chess drama "The Dark Horse," starring Cliff Curtis, and the Maori biographical drama "Whina," starring Rena Owen.

Co-starring Oleg Ivenko and Natasha Alderslade, "The American" is slated to be released in the U.S. on May 17th.
