First, there was the beloved Oscar-winning animated classic. Then came the hyper-realistic CG film adaptation that took the world by storm. Now, get ready for the prequel, delving into the origins of the iconic King Mufasa, led by Barry Jenkins, the acclaimed director of the Oscar-winning "Moonlight."

Check out the first official teaser trailer for "Mufasa: The Lion King," a prequel of sorts to Disney's 2019 "live-action" reimagining of the beloved 1994 animated masterpiece. This time, the narrative zooms in on the legendary King Mufasa (father of Simba), chronicling his journey as a young orphaned lion cub taken in by a royal family, eventually rising to lead the pride.

Aaron Pierre, known from Barry Jenkins's Amazon miniseries "The Underground Railroad," voices the young Mufasa, while Kelvin Harrison Jr. ("Waves," "Elvis") lends his voice to Taka, a lion prince who embraces Mufasa as a brother.

The voice cast also boasts Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, Anika Noni Rose, and Keith David. Returning to voice beloved characters are Donald Glover as Simba, Beyonce Knowles-Carter as Nala, and Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara, daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala.

Fan-favorite comedians Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner reprise their roles as Pumbaa, the lovable warthog, and Timon, the witty meerkat.

Written by Jeff Nathanson ("2019's The Lion King," "Catch Me If You Can") and directed by Barry Jenkins, "Mufasa: The Lion King" will feature songs from renowned songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda and music producer Mark Mancina, with additional music and performances by Lebo M. "Lion King" fans and moviegoers can anticipate this cinematic spectacle hitting the big screens this holiday season, with the release date set for December 20th.

MUFASA: THE LION KING enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka -- the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny -- their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.
