Daisy Ridley demonstrates her swimming skills and unwavering determination in the first official trailer for Disney's upcoming historical biographical drama "Young Woman and the Sea."

The "Star Wars" star takes on the role of Gertrude "Trudy" Ederle, a real-life American competitive swimmer from the 1920s. Ederle etched her name in history by becoming the first woman to swim across the English Channel, a remarkable feat spanning 21 miles from France to England.

The film depicts Ederle's early life as a young Olympic swimmer, supported by the steady encouragement of her sister Margaret (portrayed by Australian actress Tilda Cobham-Hervey, of the biopic "I Am Woman"). Together, they courageously undertake the formidable task of crossing the English Channel. Ederle's historic swim earns her global acclaim, marking a significant milestone in the landscape of women's sports.

Produced by mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer, the film also co-stars Stephen Graham ("Boardwalk Empire"), Kim Bodnia ("Killing Eve"), Christopher Eccleston ("28 Days Later"), Glenn Fleshler ("Barry"), and Jeanette Hain ("The Reader").

Based on Glenn Stout's book "Young Woman and the Sea: How Trudy Ederle Conquered the English Channel and Inspired the World," the film was adapted by acclaimed screenwriter Jeff Nathanson ("Catch Me If You Can," "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales").

The film is directed by renowned Norwegian director Joachim Ronning. Known for his solo directing work on Disney's "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" and his current involvement in the upcoming "Tron: Ares," Ronning previously garnered acclaim for co-directing the Oscar-nominated Norwegian historical film "Kon-Tiki" alongside his former directing collaborator Espen Sandberg.

"Young Woman and the Sea" is set to make a splash in select theaters on May 31st.
