Annie Baker is an American playwright who earned the coveted Pulitzer Prize for her 2014 play "The Flick." Now, she takes on her feature debut with "Janet Planet," a heartwarming drama delving into the intricacies of motherhood, as told through the perspective of a young daughter who adores her carefree, nature-loving mother.

Set in rural Western Massachusetts during the summer of 1991, the film stars Julianne Nicholson, known for "Mare of Easttown" and "Dream Scenario," as Janet, a single mother with a down-to-earth, holistic approach to life. Janet is raising her 11-year-old daughter Lacy (played by newcomer Zoe Ziegler) while working as an acupuncturist. Together, they embark on a journey to reconnect with nature, forming a unique bond as Lacy navigates the complexities of adolescence during this pivotal summer of growing up.

The cast also includes Elias Koteas, Will Patton, and Sophie Okonedo in supporting roles.

After its successful premiere at last year's Telluride Film Festival, "Janet Planet" has been met with glowing reviews. Distributed by A24 Films, the film is now set to debut in select theaters on June 21st, with a nationwide expansion scheduled for June 28th. Be sure to watch the newly-released official trailer above.

synopsis:
In rural Western Massachusetts, 11-year-old Lacy spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother, Janet. As the months pass, three visitors enter their orbit, all captivated by Janet and her spellbinding nature. In her solitary moments, Lacy inhabits an inner world so extraordinarily detailed that it begins to seep into the outside world. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker captures a child's experience of time passing, and the ineffability of a daughter falling out of love with her mother, in this singularly sublime film debut.
