In the shadowy world of espionage, where trust is a scarce commodity and deception is the name of the game, HBO presents "The Sympathizer," a new espionage thriller miniseries based on Viet Thanh Nguyen's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name.

Executive produced by recent Oscar-winner Robert Downey Jr., this limited drama is helmed by acclaimed Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, known for his stylish masterpieces like "Oldboy" and "Decision to Leave," who directs the first three episodes.

The newly released official full trailer offers a glimpse into the riveting story, featuring Australian-Vietnamese actor Hoa Xuande as the titular character, "The Captain," an undercover Communist sympathizer who finds himself entangled in a web of intrigue in post-Vietnam War America. Meanwhile, Downey Jr. dons various guises as an enigmatic CIA operative, seeking to recruit "The Captain" as a double agent.

Set against the backdrop of the late 1960s and early 1970s, "The Sympathizer" features an impressive ensemble cast of Asian actors, including Sandra Oh, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le, Alan Trong, and Ky Duyen.

Acclaimed Canadian writer-director-actor Don McKellar joins Park Chan-wook and the Downeys as executive producer, contributing to the series' development and serving as co-showrunner alongside Park. Meanwhile, acclaimed directors Fernando Meirelles ("City of God," "The Constant Gardener") and Marc Munden ("Utopia," "The Third Day") are among those directing different episodes of the miniseries.

Prepare to be immersed in a world of Cold War intrigue and betrayal as "The Sympathizer" makes its debut on HBO MAX on April 14th. Watch the full trailer above.
