Zoe Saldana takes on the role of a desperate immigrant seeking to cross into the United States in the official trailer for the border-crossing thriller "The Absence of Eden."

Set against the backdrop of the pressing immigrant issue along the United States-Mexico border, the film follows a woman (Saldana, from "Avatar" and "Guardians of the Galaxy") fleeing from the clutches of the Mexican Cartel. She embarks on a perilous journey to cross the border, only to join a group of undocumented immigrants led by brutal coyotes. Amidst the chaos, she takes charge of a young child whose mother falls victim to smugglers.

Simultaneously, the movie also tracks the personal struggles of an American border officer (played by Garrett Hedlund, from "TRON: Legacy") responsible for maintaining security along the United States-Mexico border. As he navigates the complexities of his job, he finds himself increasingly conflicted, recognizing that the realities of the border situation are far more nuanced than he initially perceived.

The film, also co-starring Adria Arjona ("Andor"), Tom Waits ("Seven Psychopaths"), and Chris Coy ("The Peripheral"), is directed and co-written by Marco Perego, making his feature film debut. Notably, Perego is also Zoe Saldana's husband. They both are serving as the film's producers.

"The Absence of Eden" is slated for theatrical release on April 12th. Watch the trailer, above.

synopsis:
THE ABSENCE OF EDEN takes place at the border between the United States and Mexico -- a hellish landscape inhabited by coyotes, armed officers, desperate immigrants, and refugees. When Esmee (Zoe Saldana), a young woman working as a private dancer in Mexico, is forced to commit a violent act of self-defense that results in the death of a cartel member, she flees her homeland for sanctuary in the United States. Guided by a ruthless Coyote and a group of undocumented immigrants, she befriends a young mother and her daughter along the way. Before crossing the border, the mother is taken from the group, and Esmee promises to protect her daughter and help them reunite again in America, touching off an interlocking story about people struggling to survive on America's border with Mexico.
