Ever get the sense that society is regressing to a primal state? "The Animal Kingdom," a new French film, embraces that notion wholeheartedly. Starring Romain Duris ("All the Money in the World"), Paul Kircher ("Winter Boy"), and Adele Exarchopoulos ("Blue Is the Warmest Colour"), this fantasy-infused drama envisions a modern world where a peculiar genetic anomaly transforms random individuals into hybrid human-animal beings.

In the new film, Romain Duris portrays Francois, an average family man embarking on a quest to find his missing wife, who has succumbed to this condition and disappeared into the forest. Alongside a local police officer (Exarchopoulos) and his son Emile (Kircher), Francois ventures into the unknown.

The film, which premiered last summer at the Cannes Film Festival, is co-written and directed by French filmmaker Thomas Cailley, known for the 2014 French romantic comedy "Love at First Fight." Cailley has stated that he drew inspiration from the imaginative animated works of Studio Ghibli master Hayao Miyazaki. He also cites Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers" as a significant influence in coming up with the film's bizarre concept.

"The Animal Kingdom" is set to debut in select U.S. theaters and on VOD on March 15th. To get a glimpse of this boundary-pushing, genre-blending flick, you can watch the newly released U.S. trailer above.
