While Australian actress Mia Wasikowska gained fame for her portrayal of the wide-eyed ingenue Alice in the Disney blockbuster "Alice in Wonderland," she is now exploring her darker side. In the upcoming pitch-black horror satire "Club Zero," Wasikowska takes on the role of a smiling, friendly-faced teacher with nefarious motives.

In the newly released trailer for the upcoming film, we see Wasikowska as Miss Novak, a newly appointed teacher at a prestigious international boarding school. Her character, while outwardly friendly and smiling, harbors sinister intentions. Miss Novak begins to subtly influence her teenage students about their eating habits, promoting an extreme low-calorie diet under the guise of reducing their carbon footprint. However, her tactics soon take a disturbing turn. As concerned parents start to voice their objections, they are unexpectedly met with resistance as some students start to fervently support Miss Novak, displaying cult-like devotion.

Directed by Austrian filmmaker Jessica Hausner, known for her quirky and offbeat movies, including the acclaimed 2019 film "Little Joe," starring Emily Beecham and Ben Whishaw.

The film, which had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, also stars Sidse Babett Knudsen, Elsa Zylberstein, Mathieu Demy, Amir El-Masry, Ksenia Devriendt, Luke Barker, Florence Baker, and Samuel D Anderson.

"Club Zero" is scheduled for a theatrical release, starting in New York on March 15th, followed by Los Angeles on March 22nd, and then expanding to more cities thereafter.

synopsis:
At an international boarding school, an unassuming, yet rigorous, Miss Novak (Mia Wasikowska) joins the teaching staff to instruct a new class on "conscious eating." Her impressionable teenage students each have their own reasons for joining the class -- to improve fitness, reduce their carbon footprint, or get extra credit. Although early lectures focus on mindful consumption, Miss Novak’s discussions soon become increasingly disordered and extreme. A suspicious headmistress, concerned parents and the failing health of her students lead everyone to question the inscrutable Miss Novak's motivations for teaching the class. As a few devoted pupils fall deeper under her cult-like tutelage, they are given a new, even more sinister goal to aspire to -- joining the ominous "Club Zero."
