Who would have thought that a couple of anonymous letters could trigger so much chaos? Check out the official U.S. trailer for "Wicked Little Letters," the new British period comedy that pits Academy Award winner Olivia Colman ("The Favourite") against Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley ("The Lost Daughter").

Based on an "outrageous" true story, the film features Colman as Edith Swan, a deeply conservative woman residing in a charming 1920s English coastal town. Living next door is her starkly contrasting neighbor, Rose Gooding (portrayed by Buckley), a spirited Irish migrant who is unapologetically outspoken.

Edith and Rose soon find themselves embroiled in a fiery dispute surrounding an anonymous letter brimming with profanity and expletives. Despite Rose's penchant for colorful language, she vehemently denies being the author of the letter. The appearance of more such letters throughout the town sets off a passionate response among the local women. Some are driven to take action, while others simply strive to quell the ensuing turmoil.

Directed by Thea Sharrock (known for "Me Before You" and "The One and Only Ivan") and written by British comedian Jonny Sweet, the film also boasts an ensemble cast including Anjana Vasan, Malachi Kirby, Eileen Atkins, Timothy Spall, and Gemma Jones.

Acquired by Sony Pictures Classics, "Wicked Little Letters" is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters, starting in New York and Los Angeles on March 29th, followed by a wider release on April 5th. Prepare for a delightful clash of personalities in this new British period comedy.

synopsis:
A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a dark and absurd scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger than fiction true story, WICKED LITTLE LETTERS follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town's women -- led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) -- begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all.
