Since his breakout role in the 2008 Oscar-winning film "Slumdog Millionaire," Dev Patel has continually demonstrated his remarkable acting talent. He received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2016 for his role in the drama "Lion," and he garnered significant praise for his lead performance in the 2021 fantasy film "The Green Knight." So, given this trajectory, one might assume Dev Patel is primarily focused on advancing his acting career? Surprisingly, that's not entirely the case. This year he makes his directorial debut -- and it's an action revenge film, no less! The film seems to take action cues from "Bourne Identity" while also incorporating elements reminiscent of "John Wick." All of this unfolds against the backdrop of an electrifying Indian setting, infused with inspiration from Hindu mythology. And it's a welcome surprise, to say the least.
Check out the first official trailer for "Monkey Man," Dev Patel's promising directorial debut. The film is produced by Jordan Peele under his Monkeypaw production label. Patel is a man who wears many hats on this project, as he also serves as co-writer, star, and producer alongside Peele.
In "Monkey Man," Patel portrays the "Kid," a young man who scrapes by in an underground fight club. Nightly, he dons a gorilla mask and endures beatings from more popular fighters for money. Fueled by deep-seated anger, the Kid embarks on a vengeance-fueled journey against the corrupt leaders responsible for his mother's death and the ongoing exploitation of the impoverished and powerless. Set in India, with its vibrant landscapes and gritty underworld, the film draws loose inspiration from Hanuman, a revered deity in Hindu mythology known for symbolizing devotion, strength, and bravery.
The film is Dev Patel's first foray into directing, and the trailer suggests he might have a bright future in this field as well. Patel is joined by a strong supporting cast that includes Sharlto Copley ("District 9"), Sobhita Dhulipala ("Made in Heaven"), Pitobash ("Million Dollar Arm"), Vipin Sharma ("Hotel Mumbai"), Ashwini Kalsekar ("Ek Tha Hero"), Adithi Kalkunte ("Hotel Mumbai"), Sikandar Kher ("Aarya"), and Makarand Deshpande ("RRR").
"Monkey Man" is set to hit theaters on April 5th.
