FX has released a new official red band trailer for "Shogun," a limited series adaptation based on the bestselling 1975 novel by author James Clavell.

The novel served as the source material for an epic 1980 television miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain, Toshiro Mifune, and Yoko Shimada. Airing on NBC over five nights, it achieved massive ratings and won three Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited Series. It was widely regarded as one of the finest miniseries produced during the 1980s, a decade known for exceptional miniseries.

This new adaptation promises to be equally ambitious but also more historically accurate. Set against the backdrop of feudal Japan around the year 1600, the drama revolves around Lord Yoshii Toranaga, portrayed by Hiroyuki Sanada ("The Last Samurai," "John Wick: Chapter 4"). Toranaga becomes embroiled in a century-defining civil war, and his world is thrown into disarray when a mysterious European ship is discovered stranded in a nearby fishing village.

Onboard the ship is English pilot John Blackthorne, played by Cosmo Jarvis ("Lady Macbeth"), who carries secrets that could potentially shift the balance of power in Toranaga's favor and challenge the formidable influence of Blackthorne's own adversaries. Toda Mariko, portrayed by Anna Sawai (currently starring in Apple's "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters"), is a mysterious Christian noblewoman serving as a translator and is caught in the intricate web of these men's destinies. She must prove her worth and loyalty while navigating her family's dishonorable connections.

"Shogun" is created and written by the husband-and-wife team of Justin Marks (creator of "Counterpart") and Rachel Kondo, with Marks serving as the primary showrunner. The cast also features supporting performances by Tadanobu Asano, Hiro Kanagawa, Fumi Nikaido, Ako, Shinnosuke Abe, and Nestor Carbonell.

For a glimpse of the grittier and bloodier nature of this new version of "Shogun," you can watch the red band trailer, featured above. Meanwhile, "Shogun" is set to debut on February 27th, exclusively on Hulu through the FX channel.

synopsis:
FX's SHOGUN, based on James Clavell's bestselling novel, is set in Japan in the year 1600, at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village. Its English pilot, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), comes bearing secrets that could help Toranaga tip the scales of power and devastate the formidable influence of Blackthorne's own enemies -- the Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants. Toranaga's and Blackthorne's fates become inextricably tied to their translator, Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), a mysterious Christian noblewoman and the last of a disgraced line. While serving her lord amidst this fraught political landscape, Mariko must reconcile her newfound companionship with Blackthorne, her commitment to the faith that saved her and her duty to her late father.
