Academy Award winner Julianne Moore takes on the role of the notorious royal schemer Mary Villiers, Countess of Buckingham, in the upcoming historical drama series from STARZ, titled "Mary & George," for which the first official teaser trailer has been released.

Moore stars alongside Nicholas Galitzine (from "Red, White & Royal Blue") portraying Mary's devoted courtier son, George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham. Additionally, Scottish character actor Tony Curran ("Blade II," "Defiance") steps into the role of King James I.

Based on the historical book "The King's Assassin" by Benjamin Woolley, the series delves into the true story of Mary Villiers, a social climber who educated her son, George, from minor gentry, for a life as a courtier -- an advisor or companion to the monarch. Mary also orchestrated George's ascent into the upper echelons of English royal society, where he became one of King James's favored "companions" and held a secret relationship as a gay lover to the King. Together, Mary and George conspired in a plot to assassinate the King.

Created by British writer D. C. Moore ("Killing Eve," "Temple"), the series boasts a strong supporting cast, including Laurie Davidson, Nicola Walker, Niamh Algar, Trine Dyrholm, Sean Gilder, and more.

"Mary & George" is slated to make its debut on the STARZ network in 2024. Until then, you can check out the teaser, above.
