The beloved Nickelodeon animated series, "Avatar: The Last Airbender," has found new life in a live-action adaptation for Netflix, with hopes that it will replace the less-than-favorable memories of the previous M. Night Shyamalan adaptation.
Check out the very first teaser for the highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the award-winning anime fantasy classic, which achieved immense popularity during its original run from 2005 to 2008 and is hailed by many as one of the greatest animated television series of all time.
Blending Asian mysticism with fantasy elements, this upcoming Netflix series aims to reenvision the epic journey of Aang and his companions in a live-action format while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original animated series. The cast of the new show features a predominantly Asian and South Asian-American ensemble, with Gordon Cormier as Avatar Aang, Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, Kiawentiio as Katara, and Ian Ousley as Sokka.
Set in a fantastical realm where four nations, each based on a classical element (water, earth, fire, or air), once coexisted harmoniously, the narrative follows the adventures of a young air-bending Nomad named Aang. His people are eradicated by the Fire Nation, compelling Aang, along with his newfound friends Sokka and Katara, to embark on a quest to assume his rightful role as the next Avatar and restore peace to the lands.
Originally, the series was executive produced and written by the creators of the original animated series, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. However, they departed from the Netflix project due to creative disagreements after working on a few episodes. The series creator, Albert Kim, was initially involved but also left due to creative concerns. The new executive producers include Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, Michael Goi, and Roseanne Liang, with Goi and Liang taking on directing duties for certain episodes.
