In 1980, the "Shogun" miniseries was a massive ratings success, paving the way for a wave of epic miniseries in the early '80s. Now, 43 years later, FX is taking on the challenge of revitalizing James Clavell's bestselling 1975 novel with a new, more ambitious, and historically accurate remake.

Check out the latest trailer for "Shogun," the upcoming FX limited series set in the backdrop of feudal Japan around the year 1600.

The drama centers on Lord Yoshii Toranaga, portrayed by Hiroyuki Sanada (known for "The Last Samurai"), who finds himself entangled in a century-defining civil war. Surrounded by adversaries, Toranaga's world is disrupted when a mysterious European ship is discovered stranded in a nearby fishing village. Onboard, they find English pilot John Blackthorne, played by Cosmo Jarvis (known for "Lady Macbeth"), who carries secrets that could potentially tip the scales in Toranaga's favor and dismantle the formidable power of Blackthorne's own adversaries. Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai; known for "Pachinko" and the upcoming "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters"), a mysterious Christian noblewoman serving as a translator, is caught in the intricate web of these men's destinies. She must prove her worth and loyalty while navigating her family's dishonorable connections.

"Shogun," created and written by the husband-and-wife team of Justin Marks (creator of "Counterpart") and Rachel Kondo, with Marks serving as the primary showrunner, also boasts remarkable supporting performances by Tadanobu Asano, Hiro Kanagawa, Fumi Nikaido, Ako, Shinnosuke Abe, and Nestor Carbonell.

The miniseries is set to debut in February 2024 on Hulu through the FX banner. Watch the new trailer, above.

synopsis:
FX's SHOGUN, based on James Clavell's bestselling novel, is set in Japan in the year 1600, at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village. Its English pilot, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), comes bearing secrets that could help Toranaga tip the scales of power and devastate the formidable influence of Blackthorne's own enemies -- the Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants. Toranaga's and Blackthorne's fates become inextricably tied to their translator, Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), a mysterious Christian noblewoman and the last of a disgraced line. While serving her lord amidst this fraught political landscape, Mariko must reconcile her newfound companionship with Blackthorne, her commitment to the faith that saved her and her duty to her late father.
