FX has released the first official trailer for its upcoming epic limited series, "Shogun," which is based on the bestselling 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. This novel was previously adapted into the popular 1980 miniseries featuring Richard Chamberlain, Toshiro Mifune, and Yoko Shimada.

In this new ten-episode verison, the main cast includes Hiroyuki Sanada (known for "John Wick 4" and "The Last Samurai") as Lord Yoshi Toranaga, Cosmo Jarvis (from "Lady Macbeth") as John Blackthorne, and Anna Sawai (seen in "Pachinko" and "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters") as Lady Mariko. The series also boasts notable supporting performances by Tadanobu Asano, Hiro Kanagawa, Fumi Nikaido, Ako, Shinnosuke Abe, and Nestor Carbonell.

Set in feudal Japan around the year 1600, this FX original series revolves around Lord Yoshii Toranaga (played by Hiroyuki Sanada), who finds himself in the midst of a century-defining civil war. Surrounded by enemies, Toranaga's world is turned upside down when a mysterious European ship is discovered marooned in a nearby fishing village. Onboard is English pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), bearing secrets that could potentially help Toranaga gain the upper hand and dismantle the formidable influence of Blackthorne's own adversaries. Caught in the complex web of these men's destinies is Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), a mysterious Christian noblewoman serving as a translator. She must prove her value and loyalty while navigating her family's dishonorable ties.

Created and written by the wife-and-husband team of Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks (known for "Counterpart"), with Marks serving as the main showrunner, "Shogun" is scheduled to premiere in February 2024 on Hulu on FX. Watch the trailer, above.

synopsis:
FX's SHOGUN, based on James Clavell's bestselling novel, is set in Japan in the year 1600, at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village. Its English pilot, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), comes bearing secrets that could help Toranaga tip the scales of power and devastate the formidable influence of Blackthorne's own enemies -- the Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants. Toranaga's and Blackthorne's fates become inextricably tied to their translator, Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), a mysterious Christian noblewoman and the last of a disgraced line. While serving her lord amidst this fraught political landscape, Mariko must reconcile her newfound companionship with Blackthorne, her commitment to the faith that saved her and her duty to her late father.
