Oscar-winning actor Anthony Hopkins takes on the remarkable true story of Sir Nicholas Winton in the biographical drama "One Life," as revealed in the film's first official trailer.

In this film, Hopkins portrays Sir Nicholas "Nicky" Winton, a British broker who, as a young man during the months leading up to World War II, performed a heroic feat by rescuing 669 children in Czechoslovakia from the clutches of the Nazis.

The movie employs flashbacks, with Johnny Flynn playing a young Nicky Winton, to tell the extraordinary true story of Winton's tireless efforts to assist groups of Jewish children in German-occupied Czechoslovakia in hiding and escaping just before the outbreak of war.

For decades, Winton's life has been shadowed by the fate of those he saved. It wasn't until 1988, fifty years later, that Nicky finally learned about the children's fate. This revelation occurred during a famous episode of the live BBC television show "That's Life!," in which Winton was reunited with those he had rescued so many years ago.

In the film, Hopkins embodies an elderly Winton, who receives an invitation to appear on the "That's Life!" show, leading to the most significant surprise of his life.

The cast also includes Helena Bonham Carter, Lena Olin, Jonathan Pryce, Ziggy Heath, Romola Garai, Alex Sharp, and Samantha Spiro. The film is directed by veteran British TV helmer James Hawes, known for his work on shows like "Slow Horses," "The Alienist," and "Black Mirror."

"One Life" is set to have its world premiere this week at the Toronto International Film Festival. Meanwhile, UK audiences can anticipate its official release on January 5, 2024.

synopsis:
ONE LIFE tells the true story of Sir Nicholas 'Nicky' Winton, a young London broker (played by Hopkins), who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 children from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realized it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed?

Fifty years later, it's 1988 and Nicky lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn't able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. It's not until a live BBC television show, "That's Life!," surprises him by introducing him to some surviving children -- now adults -- that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he had carried for five decades.
