Although it's set to be released in theaters and on HBO Max this Friday, why not right now check out the first seven minutes of the new R-rated film adaptation of the classic fantasy fight-tournament video game "Mortal Kombat."

In this opening scene, we see a bloody and brutal confrontation between Hanzo Hasashi aka Scorpion (played by Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada, of "The Wolverine"), and Bi-Han aka Sub-Zero (played by Indonesian martial artist Joe Taslim, of "The Raid"). This is where their intense rivalry becomes intensely personal.

The film, directed by commercial helmer-turned-first-time feature director Simon McQuoid, follows several martial arts fighters as they find themselves participating in an inter-dimensional fight tournament on a remote mysterious island.

Besides Hiroyuki Sanada and Joe Taslim, the cast also includes Lewis Tan (Deadpool 2), Jessica McNamee (Sirens), Josh Lawson (House of Lies), Mehcad Brooks (Supergirl), Ludi Lin (Power Rangers), Chin Han (Marco Polo), Nathan Jones (Mad Max: Fury Road), and many more.

"Mortal Kombat" opens this Friday.

synopsis:
In MORTAL KOMBAT, MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage -- or why Outworld's Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth's greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high-stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana -- the immense power from within his soul -- in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?
