Academy Award winner Jodie Foster plays a fearless defense attorney who faces increasing scrutiny from the U.S. military when she takes on a controversial case concerning the habeas corpus rights of a still-imprisoned Guantanamo detainee (played here by "The Looming Tower" actor Tahar Rahim).

Check out the official trailer for "The Mauritanian," the upcoming based-on-a-true-story drama from acclaimed filmmaker Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland, State of Play, One Day in September).

The film, which also sees Shailene Woodley as Foster's young legal associate and Benedict Cumberbatch as a stiff-necked military prosecutor, is based on the New York Times best-selling memoir "Guantanamo Diary" by Mauritanian-born Mohamedou Ould Slahi, who was detained at Guantanamo Bay without charge for over 14 years from 2002 to 2016. He is the first-ever Guantanamo detainee to have published a memoir while still imprisoned.

Co-starring Zachary Levi and Saamer Usmani, "The Mauritanian" is scheduled to be released on February 19, 2021. Watch the first official trailer, above.

synopsis:
Captured by the U.S. Government, Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Tahar Rahim) languishes in prison for years without charge or trial. Losing all hope, Slahi finds allies in defense attorney Nancy Hollander (Jodie Foster) and her associate Teri Duncan (Shailene Woodley). Together they face countless obstacles in a desperate pursuit for justice. Their controversial advocacy, along with evidence uncovered by formidable military prosecutor, Lt. Colonel Stuart Couch (Benedict Cumberbatch), eventually reveals a shocking and far-reaching conspiracy. Based on the New York Times best-selling memoir, this is the explosive true story of a fight for survival against all odds.
