Check out the official behind-the-scenes teaser for the upcoming National Geographic mini-series "Barkskins."

Based on the best-selling historical novel of the same name by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Proulx (Brokeback Mountain, The Shipping News), the eight-part limited series dramatizes the real-life mystery behind the 17th-century massacre of French settlers who were trying to establish a new life in "New France" (now known as the North Eastern parts of Canada).

Created by Elwood Reid (FX's The Bridge, SHO's The Chi), the mini-series features a stellar ensemble cast led by David Thewlis (Wonder Woman), Marcia Gay Harden (The Newsroom), Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk), James Bloor (Dunkirk), Christian Cooke (Point Blank), Thomas M. Wright (The Bridge) and Zahn McClarnon (Fargo).

Producer-director David Slade (American Gods, NBC's Hannibal) directs the first installment of the limited eight-episode series, which is slated to premiere on Memorial Day, May 25th on the Nat Geo channel with back-to-back episodes over four weeks.

synopsis:
BLOOD. LAND. EMPIRE.

BARKSKINS examines the mysterious massacre of settlers in the vast and unforgiving wilds of 1690s New France that threatens to throw the region into all-out war. Likely suspects abound -- the English, the Hudson's Bay Company and a band of Kanien'keha:ka (Iroquois) possibly in league with the English looking to drive the French from the territory -- but who or what brought these settlers to such a tragic end?

National Geographic's new eight-part limited series, BARKSKINS, created by Elwood Reid and based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Annie Proulx, transports viewers to the wild frontier of the late 17th century.
