The official U.S. trailer has been released for "The Personal History of David Copperfield," the new film from Armando Iannucci, the Emmy-winning creator of "Veep" and the writer-director of the critically acclaimed sharp political satires "The Death of Stalin" and "In the Loop."

Co-written by Iannucci and his frequent comedy writing partner Simon Blackwell, the film offers an off-kilter comedic adaptation of author Charles Dickens' classic semi-biographical, coming-of-age 1850s novel about a young Englishman, David Copperfield (played here by Dev Patel, from "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Lion"), who is trying to find his place in the world when he is sent to find work in London, following the deaths of his parents.

The cast also includes Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton, Emmy-winner Hugh Laurie, former "Doctor Who" star Peter Capaldi, Emmy-winner Ben Whishaw, with English comedian Paul Whitehouse, Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie, Doctor Strange's Benedict Wong, Dunkirk's Aneurin Barnard, Morfydd Clark, and Rosalind Eleazar.

"The Personal History of David Copperfield" is slated to open in the U.S. on May 8th. Watch the trailer, above.

synopsis:
THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD re-imagines Charles Dickens' classic ode to grit and perseverance through the comedic lens of its award-winning filmmakers -- giving the Dickensian tale new life for a cosmopolitan age with a diverse ensemble cast of stage and screen actors from across the world.

Emmy winners and Oscar nominees Armando Iannucci (IN THE LOOP, THE DEATH OF STALIN, HBO'S Veep) and Simon Blackwell (IN THE LOOP, HBO'S Succession) lend their wry, yet heart-filled storytelling style to revisiting Dickens' iconic hero on his quirky journey from impoverished orphan to burgeoning writer in Victorian England.
