Oscar-and-Grammy-winning star Jennifer Hudson takes on the role of legendary soul singer Aretha Franklin in the upcoming musical biopic, for which an official teaser has just been released.
"Respect" is an upcoming musical extravaganza that will trace the meteoric rise of the 1960s and '70s recording artist who became known around the world as "The Queen of Soul."
Besides Hudson, the film will also star Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker as Aretha's father, Baptist minister and civil rights activist. C. L. Franklin; Tony Award winner Audra McDonald as Aretha's mother, Barbara Siggers Franklin; Grammy-winner Mary J. Blige as legendary singer Dinah Washington; Tituss Burgess as gospel singer James Cleveland; and Marc Maron as famed music producer Jerry Wexler.
Marlon Wayans, Saycon Sengbloh, Hailey Kilgore, Skye Dakota Turner, and Tate Donovan round out the cast.
The film is directed by Tony Award-winning theatre director Liesl Tommy, who makes her feature directorial debut. Her directing credits include various episodes of "Jessica Jones," "The Walking Dead," "Insecure," and "Mrs. Fletcher."
"Respect" will be released in December 2020.
