From Armando Iannucci, the Emmy-winning creator of "Veep" and the writer-director of the critically acclaimed sharp political satires "The Death of Stalin" and "In the Loop," comes this slightly off-kilter comedic adaptation of author Charles Dickens' classic semi-biographical, coming-of-age novel about a young English man trying to find his place in the world when he is sent to find work in London following the deaths of his parents.

Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire, Lion) tackles the role of the young David Copperfield in this quirky film adaptation of the 1850 novel, which highlights Dickens' sly humor, yet was done with modern sensibilities, including the use of color-blind casting.

In addition to Patel, the film also stars Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton, Emmy-winner Hugh Laurie, former "Doctor Who" star Peter Capaldi, recent Emmy-winner Ben Whishaw, English comedian Paul Whitehouse, Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie, Doctor Strange's Benedict Wong, Dunkirk's Aneurin Barnard, and Harlots' Rosalind Eleazar.

Directed by Iannucci and co-written by Iannucci and his frequent writing partner Simon Blackwell, "The Personal History of David Copperfield" premiered a couple of weeks ago to solid reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The film is slated to screen this week at the London Film Festival, and will open theatrically in the UK in early 2020. Watch the first official international trailer, above.

synopsis:
An avid Dickens fan, Armando Iannucci (the award-winning writer/director of The Thick of It, In the Loop, Veep and The Death of Stalin) adapts here, alongside frequent collaborator Simon Blackwell, employing his comedic mastery and vivid characterizations to bring to life one of Dickens' most cherished characters in THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD.

From birth to infancy, from adolescence to adulthood, the good-hearted David Copperfield is surrounded by kindness, wickedness, poverty and wealth, as he meets an array of remarkable characters in Victorian England. As David sets out to be a writer, in his quest for family, friendship, romance and status, the story of his life is the most seductive tale of all.
